Patient doing Physical Therapy at Chandler Chiropractic

One of the biggest myths about chiropractic is that you only need a chiropractor when your back hurts.

Back pain? Call the chiropractor.

Neck pain? Maybe.

Car accident? Definitely.

Anything else? Most people don’t even think about chiropractic.

After more than 22 years in practice, I can tell you that this is one of the biggest misunderstandings about what chiropractors actually do.

Chiropractic isn’t just about your back. It’s about how your body moves, functions, and communicates through the nervous system.

And that’s a much bigger conversation.

Why Do Chiropractors Focus So Much on the Spine?

There’s a reason chiropractors spend so much time evaluating the spine.

Your spine isn’t simply a stack of bones holding you upright. It protects your spinal cord, while nerves branching from the spinal cord communicate throughout your body.

That’s why we often describe the nervous system as the motherboard of the body.

Your brain and body are constantly communicating.

Meanwhile, your muscles and joints continually send sensory information back toward your brain.

When spinal joints become restricted or misaligned, movement can change. Surrounding muscles may tighten or compensate as well. In some situations, irritation or pressure involving nerves can contribute to pain, numbness, tingling, or other symptoms.

Chiropractic adjustments help restore movement to restricted joints, improve spinal mechanics, and reduce unnecessary mechanical stress.

So yes, we work on the back.

But we aren’t interested in your spine simply because it’s your back. We’re interested in what the spine protects and how it relates to the nervous system.

Symptoms Are Information

Pain is easy to understand.

You hurt, so you know something is wrong.

However, your body can give you other signals too.

Headaches, numbness, tingling, stiffness, limited range of motion, weakness, balance changes, recurring muscle tension, and changes in physical performance can all tell us something about how your body is functioning.

We don’t assume every symptom means you need an adjustment.

Instead, we ask why the symptom is happening.

That’s an important difference.

At Chandler Chiropractic and Chandler Chiropractic of Scottsdale, your first visit doesn’t begin with an adjustment. It begins with a conversation and examination.

We want to understand the story behind what you’re experiencing.

Dr. Mike Schloemp Adjusting a PatientChiropractic Can Help With Much More Than Back Pain

The patients who walk through our doors aren’t all coming in because their backs hurt.

We see people with:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Sciatic pain
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Shoulder, hip, knee, and other joint problems
  • Postural problems and tech neck
  • Sports injuries
  • Reduced mobility and flexibility
  • Pregnancy-related back and pelvic discomfort
  • Auto accident and whiplash injuries
  • Balance and movement problems
  • Recurring muscle tension
  • Difficulty performing at their normal athletic level

And sometimes people come in because they simply want their body evaluated and want to stay active as they age.

For example, headaches can sometimes have a significant cervical component. We explain that connection in our article on how neck problems can cause headaches.

Likewise, someone experiencing recurring lower-back or leg symptoms may need to determine whether the problem involves the spine, joints, muscles, discs, or nerves.

That’s why the examination comes first.

What About Digestion, Fatigue, or Other Health Concerns?

This is where the conversation about chiropractic sometimes gets confusing.

Your nervous system is involved throughout your body, including communication with muscles, organs, glands, and other tissues.

For example, your digestive system is heavily regulated by the autonomic and enteric nervous systems. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases explains how nerves and hormones help control the digestive process.

That doesn’t mean every digestive problem is caused by a spinal misalignment.

And it doesn’t mean we adjust someone’s spine and claim to cure acid reflux, constipation, fatigue, ear infections, or another medical condition.

We serve the nervous system.

If our examination identifies spinal restrictions, subluxations, joint dysfunction, or other findings appropriate for chiropractic care, that’s what we address.

If your symptoms indicate that another healthcare provider or additional testing should be involved, we recommend that too.

Our article on acid reflux, digestion, and the nervous system goes deeper into this distinction and explains why the nervous system belongs in the conversation without claiming chiropractic is a cure for GERD.

Chiropractic Isn’t About Chasing Symptoms

This may be the most important part of this entire myth.

We don’t want to simply chase wherever it hurts today.

That’s not how we practice.

We want to understand why your body isn’t functioning the way it should.

That’s why our examinations may include range of motion, posture, muscle testing, joint movement, neurological and orthopedic testing, balance testing, and palpation of individual spinal segments.

When clinically appropriate, we also use digital X-rays to evaluate alignment, degeneration, previous injuries, and other structural findings.

Then we put the pieces together.

If you’d like to understand more about that process, our article on What Does a Chiropractor Do? explains why chiropractic care involves much more than simply “cracking backs.”

What Does the Research Say About Chiropractic?

Research supports spinal manipulation for several musculoskeletal conditions, particularly certain types of back and neck pain.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health provides an overview of spinal manipulation, its uses, research, and safety.

However, chiropractic continues to evolve beyond the idea that someone should wait until they’re in severe pain before having their movement and spinal function evaluated.

For us, the bigger picture includes mobility, posture, joint function, nervous system health, athletic performance, injury recovery, and helping people remain active throughout life.

So, Is Chiropractic Just for Back Pain?

Absolutely not.

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people discover chiropractic.

But it shouldn’t be the only reason they understand chiropractic.

Your spine has an important relationship with your movement and nervous system. That’s why we evaluate how your body is moving and functioning rather than simply asking where it hurts.

Sometimes chiropractic is the answer.

Sometimes it’s one part of the answer.

And sometimes our examination tells us that another provider needs to be involved.

That’s exactly why we examine first.

At Chandler Chiropractic and Chandler Chiropractic of Scottsdale, our goal isn’t simply to make today’s symptom disappear.

We want to understand what’s causing the problem, improve how your body functions, and help you stay active through every stage of life.

Because chiropractic is about much more than your back.

It’s about helping your body function at its best.

Lasting results for all stages of life.
