Sometimes wellness involves more than physical health. Mental and emotional well-being matter too. The mind-body connection affects how we feel and function each day.
Stress can affect the body in many ways. Physical, emotional, and biochemical stress can influence sleep, muscle tension, energy, mood, and overall health. Healthy stress-management strategies can help protect your well-being.
Unfortunately, phones can make disconnecting difficult. Emails, text messages, social media, notifications, and phone calls keep us constantly connected. Over time, this stimulation can make it harder to relax and recharge.
Need a break from technology? Try these three simple steps:
- Create a Plan – Decide when you want to disconnect and how long your break will last. You might avoid technology during certain hours each day or take a break for several days. If necessary, set an out-of-office message and tell people when you’ll be available. Plan ahead so you can follow through.
- Tell a Friend or Family Member – Accountability can help you maintain a new habit. Tell your family or friends about your plan. Ask them to help you stay on track. They may even notice when you accidentally open Facebook during your technology-free time!
- Create a Reminder – Place a reminder where you’ll see it often. Try your bedside table, bathroom mirror, or workspace. A simple visual cue can help you stay focused.
You don’t have to give up technology completely. Even short breaks from your phone can help you relax, move, spend time with family, get outside, or enjoy some quiet.
Give yourself permission to disconnect occasionally. Your mind and body may thank you.
